An Evening Surrounded by Light, Water, and Masterpieces—Immersive Art in Tokyo’s Bay Area
There’s much more to a night in Tokyo than dinner and city views. Within easy reach of Hilton Tokyo Odaiba, the Toyosu and Ariake areas are home to two immersive art experiences: teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com, where you can physically enter artworks, and RÊVE DES LUMIÈRES, where masterpieces unfold around you through light and sound.
At both venues, you do more than simply observe. You step into the art and immerse yourself in the space—a unique way to spend an evening in Tokyo’s waterfront district.

Head from Hilton Tokyo Odaiba toward Toyosu and Ariake, and you’ll notice the waterfront takes on a different character after dark. Lights glide past the windows of the Yurikamome Line, and the city feels quieter than it does during the day. Two immersive art destinations await along this route.

The first is teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com, directly across from Shin-Toyosu Station. The second, RÊVE DES LUMIÈRES, is located inside Tokyo Dream Park in Ariake. Both offer intuitive, immersive experiences that international visitors can enjoy without much explanation.
Your senses instantly respond before you have time to analyze what you’re seeing. Light shifts. Water ripples. Flowers spread across the space. Elsewhere, the colors of familiar paintings and music fill the room. That immediate, sensory appeal is part of what makes immersive art so accessible for travelers.

teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM.com is an immersive art museum created by the art collective teamLab. Here, the experience goes beyond simply viewing art; you physically enter it.
You remove your shoes and move around, attuned to the changing sensations beneath your feet. At different points, you find yourself surrounded by light, wading through water, or moving through fields of flowers. Gradually, the line between viewer and artwork begins to blur.

The works constantly shift. As visitors move through them, the patterns of light shift and the space itself appears to change. Someone stops; someone else walks on. With each movement, the environment subtly transforms.
Signage in multiple languages is displayed throughout the museum, and staff are available to assist visitors in English. While the artworks themselves are highly intuitive, the clear guidance on admission and navigating the museum also makes the experience more convenient for international guests.
Rather than observing a finished work as an outsider, you become part of it. This sense of participation is central to the experience at teamLab Planets.
In the Water Area, Art Begins at Your Feet

Few areas capture the spirit of teamLab Planets better than the Water Area, which visitors experience barefoot. Here, art engages more than your vision. The sensations beneath your feet are also integral to the experience.
You walk up a slope with water cascading toward you. You cross a soft surface that gives way beneath your weight. Your feet meet the cool firmness of a mirrored floor. Then you slowly step into water illuminated by shifting light. Each changing surface underfoot influences your pace and even your posture.
These are sensations a photograph can’t simply capture. That’s what sets the Water Area apart: you don’t just view the art—you experience it physically.

In the water-based installations, visitors’ movements ripple across the surface, altering the play of light. This isn’t a pre-recorded sequence. The scene evolves in real time, shaped by the people present. No two encounters with the work are the same.
For international visitors, stepping barefoot into water to become part of the artwork can be a surreal experience in itself. Before anything needs to be explained, the sensation draws you in. That immediacy is part of its appeal.

Another immersive art experience not to be missed in the Tokyo Bay area is RÊVE DES LUMIÈRES, located at Tokyo Dream Park in Ariake. Its French name means “Dream of Lights,” and its concept is a shift from simply viewing art to being surrounded by it.
Images and music fill the expansive exhibition space, taking paintings beyond the frame and immersing visitors in their colors, lines, and atmosphere.

The venue’s first main program features the paintings of Vincent van Gogh. Iconic works such as Sunflowers and The Starry Night stretch across the walls and floor. Enlarged brushstrokes and fields of color offer a different experience of these familiar paintings compared to viewing them in a book or a conventional gallery.
A short program, happening simultaneously, explores the architectural world of Antoni Gaudí. Curves, ornamentation, and lights take on a different character through moving images and sounds. The experience creates a sensation of stepping inside structures instead of just looking at them.
Although both venues fall under the broad category of immersive art, teamLab Planets and RÊVE DES LUMIÈRES feel distinctly different. At teamLab Planets, your body responds to the work through water, changing surfaces, and movement. At RÊVE DES LUMIÈRES, renowned masterpieces unfold in new ways as you stand within a panoramic display of light and sound.
Visit one for a night out, or explore both on different days during your stay. Together, these two venues in Toyosu and Ariake expand your options for an evening beyond the hotel.

Step outside and back into the night along the waterfront. City lights, reflections on the water, illuminated windows—the memory of the art you’ve just experienced begins to overlap with the Tokyo scenery around you.
By the time you return to Hilton Tokyo Odaiba, you may find the city at night looks a little different. Immersive art doesn’t necessarily end when you leave the venue. Its afterimage becomes part of the evening—and how you remember Tokyo.
